The main cast of the Ninja Turtles legacy portrayed by artist extraordinarie Dave Rapoza, I’m happy to post this one since receiving the announcement of the Michael Bay version of these guys being shut down because of major problems with the script. Maybe Hollywood listened just this once and we won’t get our childhood raped again?

Artist Highlight: Adi Granov (2012)

Man this is a though one, how can I describe the art of this guy without sounding like a complete utter fanboy? the shortest answer is that I can’t. Allow me to explain myself. As you can see, Adi here is a very talented artist, he’s credited with a couple of things you may have heard of, like “The Marvel hero arrival pose” (see Iron Man there, he was the first to do it kids!) and the second one is Iron Man’s current look. That’s right: he has worked as a designer for both Iron Man movies. Maybe that’s not what is releveant about Adi, but you just have to take a closer look to see what Im talking about.

Adi Granov’s characters looks powerful and imposing, they intimidate you and they could very well be real people, he has flawless anatomy on his work, yet every piece he does gives his well deserved compliment to the super hero universe he’s representing. He’s also an in-demand guy: Marvel has hired him to do art for about anything in the last couples of years. From the “Wolverine & The X-Men” DVD collection cover, to the “Marvel Vs Capcom 3” American box art.

He’s also not shy to share some of his secrets as you can read on his website Adi creates his art producing rough sketches digitally. Once a final layout has been decided on, he tightens up the sketch and prints it out. He then uses a light box to transfer the sketch onto paper. he usually prefers smooth cotton paper like Fabriano or Arches watercolour boards, at a size of 10”x15”. He then creates the piece using pencil, his current weapons of choice are a 2mm lead holder and a mechanical pencil, both 2B, and ink, including fine liners and brush pens. For washes he uses watercolour or gouache, and occasionally use Copic markers, particularly for metallic surfaces. Once the piece is finished in greyscale, he then scan it into the computer and colour it digitally using Photoshop.

Gabriel Del’Otto is the grim artist of this medium. At least for me he is!, I mean just take a good look at these pieces done by him, although it shows the use of a colorful pallet, even guys like Superman look really dark. This of course doesn’t weight in any shape or form in a negative light when we talk about Gabrielle’s work. He’s an artist well recognized out of the comic medium as he has done books on scientific illustration, calendars and wide array of media.

When his attention was turned to comic work, man it DID show what he was capable of!. Intricate pencils and painted artwork fuse the characters with their environments and they show their happiness, their sorrow, their pain, their sense of epic. His expressions show what these characters are feeling or experiencing. His craft goes much further as he is an excellent storyteller as you can see in the “Secret Wars” and “X-Force: Sex & Violence” mini series where the fast paced action goes hand by hand with moments of quietness.

He’s also the go-to-guy for both publishers in terms of cover artwork, having illustrated the whole set of covers for the “Annihilation” mini series and assorted pieces for DC. All in all, Gabrielle is a fantastic artist, one you should keep your eye on. The way I see it, he’s still as underrated as Mike Mayhew in the terms of fandom following and that’s just not right when you have this much talent.

Taking a cue from the comic bearing the same name, you can see Spider-Man in a series of team-ups with his fellow superheroes illustrated by some of the greatest names of the comic industry: Captain America by J. Scott Campbell, Iron Man by Humberto Ramos, Red Hulk by Ed McGuiness, Wolverine by John Timms and Daredevil by Paulo Siqueira. Quick trivia: While Spidey is a full time Avenger member belonging to both teams (core Avengers and New Avengers) It wasn’t until 2005 that he received full time membership on the team, right after Avengers Dissembled. Before that he used to be just a reserve member.
